How to Create Your Capsule Wardrobe

Creating a capsule wardrobe is a great way to make your shopping habits more sustainable. By limiting the amount of money you spend on things that rarely get worn—and investing in high-quality, timeless pieces—you can make sure that everything in your wardrobe is the best of its kind.

Capsule wardrobes are about decluttering and making thoughtful, confident choices for each season. Many people will create separate capsules for each season - e.g Summer capsule wardrobe or Winter capsule wardrobe, but others make an ‘evergreen’ capsule wardrobe to use all year round.. Sounds simple enough, right? But if pressing reset on your wardrobe is a daunting prospect, Storey has put together some tips on where to start:

  • Get a wardrobe app, if you don’t already have one

The best wardrobe apps, like Storey, will help you assess your existing wardrobe, create structure, find inspiration, and sell unwanted items with one click.

  • Sell unworn items

Capsule-evangelists say that having fewer pieces to choose from actually opens up more possibilities and takes the stress out of getting dressed. Your capsule should consist of no more than 50 prime wardrobe items. If you can’t remember when you last wore it, sell it. If it’s already uploaded to your digital wardrobe then selling couldn’t be easier.

  • Pick a few essentials in a base color

This could be navy or black. An item in this color will appear in pretty much every outfit you wear.

  • Pick other essentials in neutral colours

The foundation of your wardrobe should be tops and bottoms in block neutral whites, grays, blues and browns. We’re talking comfortable and versatile t-shirts, shirts, skirts, pants and jeans.

  • Build on the basics

This is the fun part. Choose a few patterned or bright items that really speak to your style. Add layers - jackets, blazers, sweaters. Add shoes and accessories.

  • Shop for your body shape and style

A capsule wardrobe won’t work if it isn’t put together with you in mind. Just because something looks good on someone else, doesn’t mean it will suit you. Instead, tailor your choices to suit your body shape and your tastes. You can use a digital wardrobe app like Storey to find other users with a similar body shape or a similar style if you’re looking for ideas on what to include.

  • Look for the best quality

Now that you’re no longer buying everything that catches your eye, you will have more to spend on high-quality items. Arm yourself with a core set of pieces that you love and that will stand the test of time.

  • Treat yourself to a few on-trend items

Capsule wardrobes are great because they’re timeless and versatile, but once you’ve freed up all that closet space you can indulge on the occasional trending item that really inspires you.

Download the free Storey app to start creating your digital capsule wardrobe. Happy decluttering! (Hint: You can use Storey’s Collections feature to make lists of items for your capsule collection).
